US requiring new AI safeguards for government use, transparency

The White House has issued a directive requiring federal agencies to implement concrete safeguards when using artificial intelligence (AI) by December 1. The safeguards are aimed at protecting Americans' rights and ensuring safety as the government expands AI use. Agencies must monitor, assess, and test AI impacts, mitigate the risks of algorithmic discrimination, and provide transparency into AI usage. Risk assessments, operational metrics, and governance measures must also be implemented. The White House plans to hire 100 AI professionals and designate chief AI officers within federal agencies. The use of AI in areas such as transportation security, healthcare, and disaster response is mentioned.
