US eyes curbs on China's access to AI software behind apps like ChatGPT

The Biden administration is reportedly considering placing restrictions on the export of advanced AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google DeepMind, in an effort to protect US AI from China. The Commerce Department may use a threshold based on the computing power required to train a model to determine which AI models would be subject to export restrictions. The US government is concerned that adversaries could use AI models to launch cyber attacks or create bioweapons. However, implementing export controls on AI models will be challenging, as many are open-source and defining the criteria for control will be difficult.
