US data agency blames old tech and other failures for missteps

A panel appointed by acting labor secretary Julie Su has identified outdated technology, inadequate funding, and a failure to follow procedures as contributing factors to recent missteps at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The panel was formed after a botched data release allowed certain investors to view market-moving employment data before the public. The panel's report emphasized the importance of public trust in government data and provided 79 recommendations, including modernizing procedures for information sharing. Funding and technology limitations were identified as issues that require congressional action. The BLS is implementing some recommendations and seeking funding for others. Investigations by the Labor Department's inspector general and a congressional committee are ongoing.
