United Grounds Fleet of Planes Because Our ‘No Smoking’ Sign Rule Is Ridiculous

United Airlines grounded its new Airbus A321neo planes due to a technicality regarding the operation of the "No Smoking" signs. The A321neo has software that keeps the signs continuously turned on, unlike other aircraft in United's fleet. Although the FAA approved United's request for exemption to manually operate the signs in 2020, it did not include the A321neo. United grounded all five A321neos while seeking permission to add them to the existing exemption, stating that it is not a safety issue.

The U.S. Air Force has successfully tested an AI-controlled F-16 fighter jet in a dogfight. The experimental aircraft, called Vista, showcased its lightning-fast maneuvers and engaged with a human-piloted F-16. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, who flew in the AI-controlled jet, expressed confidence in the future role of AI in air combat. The Air Force plans to have a fleet of over 1,000 unmanned AI-enabled warplanes by 2028. However, concerns about the autonomy of AI in making life-and-death decisions, such as launching weapons, have been raised by arms control experts and humanitarian groups. The military's shift towards AI-driven planes is driven by security, cost, and strategic capability.

Elon Musk has sued OpenAI, a research lab that he was once a part of, on the grounds that the company violated its mission by putting profit before open-source technology. Musk alleges that OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft goes against their agreement to make technology available to benefit humanity. While legal experts suggest Musk's case is weak due to the lack of a written agreement, they also point out that the lawsuit could still have negative consequences for OpenAI, including distracting the organization from its day-to-day operations and damaging its reputation. A win for Musk could set a precedent for other donors to seek returns from non-profit organizations.

The United States government is considering banning TikTok due to concerns of it being a national security threat. Former TikTok employee, Zen Goziker, claims to have driven news reporting and congressional concerns about the app. He alleges that he was fired for refusing to sign off on a $1.5 billion program designed to address US government security concerns. Goziker's lawsuits against TikTok's parent company ByteDance and several US government agencies make several improbable claims, but court records and emails suggest that authorities may have engaged with him.
