TikTok fined in Italy after 'French scar' challenge led to consumer safety probe

Italy's competition authority, AGCM, has fined TikTok €10 million ($11 million) after an investigation into algorithmic safety concerns. The probe focused on a challenge called the "French scar," where users shared videos of marks on their faces. AGCM found that TikTok failed to monitor and prevent the dissemination of harmful content, especially to minors. The authority also criticized TikTok's reliance on algorithmic profiling, which could potentially spread dangerous content. TikTok disputes the decision and claims to have restricted the visibility of such content. The European Commission is overseeing TikTok's compliance with algorithmic accountability under the Digital Services Act, with penalties of up to 6% of global revenue.
