Thousands of routers and cameras vulnerable to new 0-day attacks by hostile botnet

Researchers from networking firm Akamai have discovered that miscreants are actively exploiting two new zero-day vulnerabilities in routers and video recorders. These previously unknown vulnerabilities allow the execution of malicious code when the affected devices use default administrative credentials. The attackers are infecting the devices with Mirai, an open-source software that turns them into bots for distributed denial-of-service attacks. Akamai has reported the vulnerabilities to the manufacturers and one has promised to release security patches next month. The specific devices and manufacturers are not disclosed to prevent further exploitation.
