Battery materials startup, Coreshell, has unveiled a breakthrough in lithium-ion batteries that could potentially lower their cost. The use of silicon in the anode of lithium-ion batteries has the potential to provide higher energy storage. However, silicon anodes tend to swell during charging, which can lead to deterioration over time. Coreshell has developed a proprietary formulation using metallurgical-grade silicon, which is cheaper and more price-competitive compared to graphite typically used in lithium-ion batteries. This development could not only reduce costs but also decrease dependence on Chinese battery supply chains. Coreshell plans to commercialize its silicon anodes starting next year.
