Temu, a fast-fashion e-commerce retailer, will need to adhere to stricter EU content regulations as its user numbers have surpassed the threshold set by the European Commission. The company joins the likes of Amazon, Meta Platforms, and TikTok as a very large online platform (VLOP) under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA). As a VLOP, Temu must combat illegal and harmful content, as well as counterfeit products on its platform. Failure to comply with the DSA could result in penalties of up to 6% of the company's global annual turnover.

TikTok's request for an interim measure to delay being designated as a "gatekeeper" by the EU has been denied by the General Court. The court found that TikTok "failed to demonstrate the urgency" required for the request. As a gatekeeper, TikTok would have to comply with the strict Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust rules. Although TikTok is appealing the gatekeeper designation, the rejection means that it will have to temporarily comply with the DMA rules that go into effect in March. Additionally, TikTok is facing a separate investigation into its content moderation rules for minors under the EU's new Digital Services Act.

The EDPS also criticized the Commission for failing to implement sufficient safeguards for personal data transferred to non-EU countries. The EDPS ordered the Commission to comply with privacy rules and cease data transfers to Microsoft and its subsidiaries in countries with no privacy agreements with the EU. The decision comes after a three-year investigation triggered by concerns over the transfer of personal data to the US following Edward Snowden's revelations in 2013.

The European Commission is investigating whether messaging app Telegram has more users in the EU than it claims, which would subject it to stricter digital rules. The probe comes as the platform's founder, Pavel Durov, faces criminal charges in France related to extremist and illegal content on the platform. Under the Digital Services Act, platforms with at least 45 million monthly active users in the EU must comply with additional regulations. Telegram previously stated it had 41 million users in the EU, but has refused to provide updated figures. If found to have over 45 million users, Telegram could face fines and other sanctions.
