Tech firms must comply with Malaysia's laws, minister says amid backlash over social media licensing plan

Tech companies operating in Malaysia must adhere to local laws, according to a communications minister, in response to the Asia Internet Coalition's (AIC) request to postpone the implementation of social media regulations. The government plans to require social media platforms with over eight million users to obtain a license by January 2025, and failure to comply could result in legal consequences. The AIC's original letter expressing concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the regulations was removed from its website and later reposted with certain statements removed. The Malaysian communications regulator has announced a public inquiry and is seeking input from industry players and the public.
