SaaS-based edtech firm Teachmint improved its financial performance in the last fiscal year, doubling its operating scale while reducing year-on-year losses by more than 39%. However, the Lightspeed-backed company has yet to achieve significant scale. Teachmint’s revenue from operations spiked to Rs 17.1 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024 from Rs 8.15 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies show. Teachmint sells education software solutions through subscriptions to schools and teachers. The sale of software solutions accounted for 73% of the operating revenue which increased by 56% to Rs 12.5 crore in FY24. The rest of the income is derived from the sale of devices like biometrics, interactive flat panels, GPS devices, among others. The Bengaluru-based company firm managed to control its overall cost, reduced by 26.6% to Rs 160 crore in FY24 from Rs 218 crore in FY23. Key areas of cost reduction include employee benefits, marketing, and IT which dwindled by 21.2%, 63.6%, and 9.1% respectively. The 2X surge and controlled expenditure helped Teachmint reduce its losses by 39.2% to Rs 110 crore during the last fiscal year from Rs 181 crore in FY23. Excluding non-cash ESOP costs, the company’s losses stood at Rs 82 crore for the fiscal year ending March 2024. Its ROCE and EBIDTA margins stood at -24.7% and -198%, respectively. On a unit level, the company spent Rs 9.36 to earn a rupee in FY24. Importantly, the firm has a total current assets of Rs 440 crore including Rs 34 crore of cash and bank balances in the last fiscal year. The company’s transformation from pre-revenue to a significant revenue jump is largely driven by shifting its focus to digitize schools. Entrackr reported about the strategic move in April last year. Teachmint faced significant challenges in FY24, including laying off over 70 employees. It has raised over $100 million in funding, with a $78 million Series B round in October 2021 at a valuation of $500 million. However, it has not raised any additional funding in the last three years. Its competitor Classplus achieved a two-fold revenue increase to Rs 213 crore in FY24, while its newer rival, Lead School, recorded 25% growth to Rs 370 crore in revenue in the same period.

Online gaming startup Winzo registered 2.8X growth in its scale during the fiscal year ending March 2023. Significantly, the Delhi-based company also posted a hefty profit of Rs 126 crore in the same period. Winzo’s revenue from operations surged to Rs 674 crore in FY23 from Rs 234 crore in FY22, its consolidated financial statements filed with the Registrar of Companies show. Established in 2018, Winzo offers over 100 games across categories such as strategy, sports, casual, card, arcade, racing, action, and board games. The service fees levied on the total funds involved in real money games, and the sale of digital or in-app vouchers were the only revenue drivers for Winzo. The company also made Rs 16.78 crore from interest (non-operating), taking its total revenue to Rs 691 core in FY23. Similar to every online gaming platform, Winzo spent a major chunk (46% of its total expenditure) on marketing (advertising cum promotions). This cost surged 29.6% to Rs 258 crore in FY23. The firm’s burn on employee benefits, legal-professional, commission paid to agents, direct gaming costs, and other overheads catalyzed its overall expenditure to Rs 564 crore in FY23 from Rs 375 crore in FY22. That said, a notable jump in scale helped Winzo report Rs 126 crore profit in FY23 as compared to a loss of Rs 130 crore in FY22. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin improved to 27% and 19% respectively. On a unit level, the company spent Rs 0.84 to earn a rupee in FY23. FY22-FY23 FY22 FY23 EBITDA Margin -53% 19% Expense/₹ of Op Revenue ₹1.60 ₹0.84 ROCE -39% 27% Winzo has raised around $100 million to date including a $65 million Series C round led by California-based Griffin Gaming Partners in July 2021. According to the startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, Makers Fund is the largest external stakeholder with 15.77% followed by Griffin Gaming Partners and Courtside Ventures. The significant jump in profits for Winzo underscores the best case scenario for most gaming platforms today. A high fixed cost business till it achieves critical mass in terms of users and fees, and post that, very low cost increases, as most of the incremental money goes to the bottomline. For Winzo, however, future investments will beckon soon, both in terms of new game development as well as the high marketing spends, which it will find tough to tamp down for now. But with a growing gamers user base across the country and with itself, next only to China, maintaining margins may not be as tough. You can be sure that if it does so in FY24, India will have its next high growth Unicorn from gaming to talk about.

Mohalla Tech, the parent entity of the vernacular social media platform ShareChat and short video entertainment app Moj, has added fresh employee stock option (ESOP) options for its employees under its existing ESOP plans. The development occurred shortly after the announcement of raising $49 million in debt from existing investors. The board at ShareChat has approved a special resolution to add 260,000 employee stock options to its existing plan, bringing the total ESOP pool to 846,300 options, its regulatory filing accessed through the Registrar of Companies (RoC) shows. Importantly, every 100 stock options will be converted into one (1) equity share at a later date decided in the agreement. The objective of expanding the ESOP pool is to promote employee ownership as well as to attract, retain, and motivate talents. As per Fintrackr’s estimates, the newly added ESOPs are worth Rs 1,017 crore or $123 million while the value of the total ESOP pool stood at Rs 3,310 crore or $400 million. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, ShareChat has raised around $1.8 billion from investors including Twitter (now X), Alkeon Capital, Moore Strategic Ventures, and Tencent, among others. Despite mopping up close to $2 billion, the company wasn’t able to show substantial revenue as of FY23. Struggle in monetization led to a steep fall in valuation which stood at less than $2 billion in the recent bridge round. The firm was valued at $5 billion during its last fundraise in June 2022. During the last fundraise, it also announced to double the ESOP ownership for all of its current employees. During FY23, ShareChat had to spend nearly Rs 4,000 crore to earn Rs 533 crore in revenue. On a unit level, the firm spent Rs 7.16 to earn a rupee of operating revenue in the last reported fiscal. This was one of the highest expense-to-revenue ratios for a unicorn in FY23.
