Indian IT services companies Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys are lagging behind global peers such as Accenture and IBM in the number of artificial intelligence (AI)-related projects, according to US research firm Information Services Group (ISG). TCS had 300 AI projects and Infosys had 200, whereas Accenture had 2,250 and IBM had 1,000. Analysts attribute the gap to the foreign companies' earlier start in AI client engagement and a more aggressive approach in marketing their projects. However, it is important to note that the data only includes five pure-play IT services companies, with only two being Indian.

The revenue contributed by each employee in top IT services companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Accenture, and Cognizant has been steadily declining since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in offshoring and preference for the offshoring model by clients has led to lower billing per employee and subsequently reduced revenue. HCL Tech witnessed the highest Revenue Per Employee (RPE) at $58,532 but also saw the steepest drop of 12.5%. Infosys, on the other hand, reported a 3% increase in RPE. The impact of offshoring has also affected foreign companies like Accenture, which experienced a 3% decline in RPE between FY19 and FY23. Profitability per employee has also decreased for most companies except for Accenture. Wipro experienced the largest drop in profitability per employee due to lower margins after the acquisition of Capco. The depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar did not aid profitability either.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has outperformed Infosys in the December quarter as its revenue rose by 1% sequentially, beating profit estimates. A significant portion of TCS's growth was driven by a large contract with BSNL. However, both TCS and Infosys are at risk of registering their slowest annual growth due to the global economic slowdown. Additionally, the combined workforce of both companies declined by 11,781 employees during the quarter. TCS reported a revenue of $7.28 billion and a net profit of $1.41 billion, while Infosys reported revenue of $4.66 billion and a net profit of $733 million.
