Superhero minus cape: CCPA wants to protect consumers but its hands are tied

India's Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), set up in 2020, has been making efforts to protect consumer rights and take action against brands violating those rights. CCPA has issued show-cause notices and initiated class-action lawsuits against companies, such as Ola Electric, for consumer rights violations, false advertising, and failure to resolve complaints. However, the regulator faces challenges such as limited enforcement powers, low penalties, overlapping regulatory responsibilities, and a lack of resources. Despite its efforts, CCPA is still in the process of establishing its jurisdiction and needs to strengthen its human resources to effectively protect consumer rights.
