Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

A new report by Turnitin, a plagiarism detection company, reveals that students have submitted over 22 million papers that potentially used generative AI in the past year. Turnitin, which developed an AI writing detection tool, found that 11% of the papers reviewed may contain AI-written language, with 3% flagged for having 80% or more AI content. However, detecting the use of generative AI remains challenging due to the originality of the text and the multiple ways students employ the technology. The risks of false positives and bias have led some universities to pause their use of AI detection tools.
