South Korea probes data protection by ecommerce platforms like AliExpress, Temu

South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) is investigating the data practices of major overseas shopping platforms, including Alibaba's AliExpress and PDD Holdings' Temu, as South Korean use of Chinese ecommerce platforms has increased. The investigation focuses on personal information processing policies, overseas transfers, and safety measures. This follows the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) sending inspectors to AliExpress to probe its consumer protection practices. South Korea saw a 121% increase in ecommerce purchases from China in 2023. Chinese platforms' growth may impact local players, but analysts believe local firms have an advantage with faster shipping and easy returns.
