Should we ban ransom payments?

The talk of a federal ban on ransom payments is gaining momentum as cybercriminals continue to profit from their attacks. While several U.S. states have already made it illegal for local government entities to pay ransom demands, there has been no national ban so far. However, the attitudes of U.S. officials seem to be shifting, especially following a U.S.-led alliance of over 40 countries vowing not to pay ransoms to cybercriminals. Implementing a ban on ransom payments, while seemingly logical, presents several challenges, including enforcement difficulties, the need for international regulation, and exceptions for critical circumstances. Moreover, experts argue that a ban may not effectively deter hackers and may push them further underground.
