Slice rolls out UPI credit card and opens UPI-powered bank branch in Bengaluru According to the company, the Slice UPI credit card comes with no joining or annual charges. Users can scan QR codes or make UPI payments to access their credit lines. Fintech company Slice has launched a UPI credit card and opened a UPI-powered physical bank branch in Bengaluru, following its merger with North East Small Finance Bank. The Slice UPI credit card offers up to 3% cashback on all spends and includes a feature called Slice in 3, allowing customers to convert purchases into three interest-free instalments. The newly opened branch in Koramangala includes UPI-integrated services, self-service kiosks, and a UPI-enabled ATM supporting deposits and withdrawals. Customers can also open accounts and access other banking products at the branch. Slice aims to integrate credit more closely with UPI and expand access to users outside the traditional credit ecosystem. Unlike most fintech companies that rely on third-party banking partners, Slice operates as a bank, controlling its infrastructure, including core banking systems and credit underwriting. Slice recently passed a resolution to rebrand North East Small Finance Bank as Slice Small Finance Bank. The merger was completed in October last year. In a media interview, Slice founder Rajan Bajaj said the bank has turned profitable on a monthly basis and the group aims to go public in the next three to four years. The Bengaluru-based company has raised nearly $400 million in funding, including a $220 million Series B round led by Tiger Global and Insight Partners. Tiger Global is the largest stakeholder, followed by Insight Partners.

Rupeeflo raises $1 Mn from Piper Serica Fintech startup Rupeeflo has raised $1 million in funding in a pre-seed round led by Piper Serica Angel Fund. Fintech veterans including Ravi Shankar (co-founder of Active AI), Kishore Natarajan, and Kedar Kulkarni (co-founder of Hyperverge) also participated in the maiden round. Rupeeflo will use the funding to roll out a full-stack NRI investment platform, introduce instant UPI access, and expand its global presence. Founded in 2024 by Dharmendra Maurya, Ashish Jha, and Manav Bharambe, Rupeeflo streamlines banking and investing for NRIs in India. Starting with the U.S. and U.K., it aims to expand across global NRI hubs. With Rupeeflo, NRIs can now digitally apply for an NRE/NRO account in less than 10 minutes and have easy and paperless access to stock markets, mutual funds, and index funds without regulatory headaches. “We see this as one of the biggest untapped opportunities in fintech. In the USA alone, NRIs have over $300 billion in low-yield savings overseas because investing in India has been too complex. We are fixing the problem so that they can participate in India's future instead of just watching from the sidelines,” said Ashish Jha. Piper Serica is an asset manager investing in India’s public and private markets. It manages a SEBI-registered PMS, advises a Mauritius-based offshore fund, and runs the Piper Serica Angel Fund for early-stage startups, overseeing over Rs 1,000 crore in assets.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has set another record as it processed more than 14 billion transactions worth Rs 20.45 lakh crore or Rs 20.45 trillion in May, according to data issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). UPI saw a 5% jump in volume and a 4% surge in value of transactions in May compared to April. This is a new high in terms of volume and value for UPI which began its operations in April 2016. Last month, the volume of transactions declined by 1% to 13.3 billion from 13.44 billion in March. The total transaction value in the same period also fell 0.7% to Rs 19.64 trillion from Rs 19.78 trillion. The transaction count is expected to rise in the coming months as NPCI is expanding UPI services to more countries. Besides India, it is also available in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, France, Nepal, UK, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka. Going forward, the Reserve Bank of India along with NPCI have plans to take UPI to 20 countries by FY29. In its annual report, RBI also said that nearly four out of five digital payments in the country were conducted on the UPI in FY24. As of April, PhonePe had 48.87% market share in the UPI ecosystem. This was followed by Google Pay and Paytm which controlled 37.5% and 8.3% market share in UPI respectively. Value wise, PhonePe had close to 51% market share followed by Google Pay and Paytm with 35% and 5% share respectively. The break up data for May is yet to be released by NPCI. NPCI is reportedly considering reviewing its decision to implement a 30% cap on the market share of UPI apps by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, industry stalwarts Adani Group and Mukesh Ambani-backed Reliance Group are also gearing up to enter the UPI and digital bank ecosystem. As per media reports, Adani Group is considering seeking for a license to operate on the UPI while Jio Financial announced a new app called JioFinance.
