Non-banking financial company Newtap Finance Private Limited is planning to raise Rs 550 crore (around $64 million) from Newtap Technologies and CRED in the near to medium term. CRED founder Kunal Shahโ€™s Newtap Technologies is the majority shareholder in Newtap Finance (formerly Parfait). According to a press release by India Ratings and Research, during FY22-24, promoters have invested Rs 149 crore in Newtap Finance, with CRED contributing a primary infusion of Rs 35.7 crore to date. Newtap Finance (NFPL) offers personal loans to individuals, with CRED serving as the loan service provider. CRED has a monthly active user base of 12 million and provides a range of services, including credit card payments, UPI transactions, vehicle management, lending, insurance, personal finance management via account aggregator rails, and rewards/deals. Newtap Financeโ€™s loan book lacks seasoning, but CRED pre-approves loans for select users based on their financial behavior. All CRED members qualify with high credit scores, which is a key eligibility criterion for the app. Kunal Shah indirectly owns 76% of Newtap Finance through his fully owned entity, Newtap Technologies, while CRED holds a 23.6% stake. Shah and CRED gained control of Newtap in 2022, but the RBI blocked CRED's bid to raise its stake in 2023. Since then, Newtap has worked to establish itself as an independent NBFC. At the end of December 2024, the total AUM outstanding on Newtap Financeโ€™s platform was Rs 1,141.6 crore, of which Rs 632 crore was on NFPLโ€™s books. NFPL has also partnered with two large lendersโ€”a bank and an NBFCโ€”for co-lending and plans to scale up co-lending in the near term. As of December 2024, CRED had an AUM (assets under management) of Rs 19,000 crore, with an NPA (non-performing asset) of 1.1%, the press release added. During the fiscal year that ended in March 2024, CRED reported a 66% year-on-year growth in its operating revenue to Rs 2,473 crore. Moreover, the operating losses for the Tiger Global-backed company reduced by 41% in the same period.

The companyโ€™s cost-reduction measures led to its adjusted EBITDA loss dropping by 88% from Rs 144 crore in FY23 to Rs 16 crore in FY24. It also improved its operating cash flows during the last fiscal year. Snapdealโ€™s revenue from operations increased by 2.1%, rising to Rs 379.76 crore in FY24 from Rs 371.96 crore in FY23, according to its consolidated financial statements filed with the RoC. Snapdealโ€™s primary revenue streams include marketing services, e-commerce enablement, and other ancillary sources. Marketing services continued to be the largest contributor, generating Rs 252.55 crore, though it witnessed a dip of 9.6% compared to FY23. Its enablement revenue increased by 14.8% to Rs 103.36 crore, reflecting the platformโ€™s growing traction among value-focused sellers. Additionally, revenue from other sources surged over 8X to Rs 23.85 crore in FY24. Snapdealโ€™s strategic focus on targeted cost-reduction initiatives led to significant expense savings across multiple categories. The companyโ€™s spending on employee benefits reduced by 48.5% to Rs 158.4 crore in FY24 from Rs 307.53 crore in FY23. Promotional costs were also reduced by 23.5% to Rs 70.37 crore during the same period. Overall, the Gurugram-based firmโ€™s total expenditure dropped by 21.4% to Rs 540.76 crore in FY24 from Rs 687.93 crore in FY23. The companyโ€™s improved performance was visible in the 43.2% reduction of loss to Rs 160.38 crore in FY24. Further, most of this loss seems to be on account of non-cash heads, including the revaluation of a put option held by Unicommerce investors to the tune of Rs 110 crore, leading to an adjusted EBITDA loss of Rs 16 crore, which shows that the company is nearing its target of reaching profitability. As per the filings, Snapdeal reduced its stake in Unicommerce, generating Rs 33 crore from a secondary sale of 3.4% stakes in May/June 2024 prior to the IPO and an offer for sale of 9.2% stake for Rs 81 crore in the IPO completed in August 2024.

B2B packaging solutions platform DCGpac has been expanding steadily, reaching nearly Rs 100 crore in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2024. Moreover, the Gurugram-based company, which raised only Rs 20 crore, achieved profitability during this period. DCGpacโ€™s revenue from operations grew by 21.4%, reaching Rs 96.5 crore in FY24, up from Rs 79.5 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show. DCGpac is a packaging materials supplier offering a range of products and services, including corrugated boxes, courier bags, bubble films, designer boxes, and โ€œDesign to Distributionโ€ solutions. Sales of packaging materials represent the sole source of revenue for DCGpac. According to the companyโ€™s website, it serves over 50,000 customers, including Blinkit, Shiprocket, Delhivery, Myntra, DHL, Shadowfax, and others. As with other packaging solutions platforms, the cost of materials accounted for 83.17% of DCGpacโ€™s total expenditure, rising by 19% to Rs 80.4 crore in FY24. Employee benefits expenses stood at Rs 8 crore for the last fiscal year. Additional costs, including advertising, warehousing, packing, information technology, printing, and other operating overheads, brought total expenditure up by 17.9% to Rs 96.7 crore in FY24, compared to Rs 82 crore in FY23. Steady growth and careful cost management helped DCGpac achieve profitability in FY24, posting net profits of Rs 19 lakh compared to a loss of Rs 1.67 crore in FY23. DCGpacโ€™s ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at 3.34% and 1.19%, respectively. On a unit level, the company spent Re 1 to earn a rupee of operating revenue in FY24. Co-working platform Smartworks has been demonstrating strong growth in the last two fiscal years โ€” its scale grew two-fold to cross Rs 710 crore in revenue in the fiscal year ending March 2023. However, the companyโ€™s losses also crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. Smartworksโ€™ revenue from operations surged 97.5% to Rs 711 crore in FY23 from Rs 360 crore in FY22, its consolidated financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show. Smartworks provides managed office spaces by leasing properties from real estate developers and subsequently subleasing them to enterprises or companies. The company has a presence across Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and others. Revenue from lease rental accounted for 97% of the total operating revenue which increased 97.4% to Rs 687 crore crore in FY23. The rest of the collections came from allied services. On the expense side, the cost of depreciation and amortization turned out to be the largest cost center accounting for 40.5% of the overall expenses. This cost surged by 67.9% to Rs 356 crore in FY23. On a unit level, it spent Rs 1.24 to earn a rupee in FY23. Gurugram-based Smartworks has raised over $50 million to date including its $25 million Series A round from the Singapore-based Keppel Land. The company is also reportedly in talks to raise $70-90 million. With its focus on managed office spaces besides co-working, Smartworks has sought to serve a larger segment of the market, particularly larger firms that are not so enamored with a co-working option. However, as evident, that can drive up costs a lot more, leaving the firm to travel an extended runway to profitability. With strong revenue momentum and a commercial market that is in very healthy condition, it does look like the firm will be in the black soon, and seeking newer avenues and markets for growth.
