Snake robots have been around for a while, offering versatility and redundancy in automation. Their ability to navigate tight spaces makes them useful in search and rescue, plumbing, and medical applications. NASA JPL is exploring their potential use in exploring extraterrestrial life, particularly on Saturn's moon Enceladus. The snake robot, known as Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor (EELS), is being tested on Earth to mimic Enceladus' icy terrain. The goal is to send EELS to explore the moon's oceans and investigate its potential for supporting life. The project is a collaboration between JPL, Arizona State University, UC San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University.
