India is on the path to achieving self-sufficiency in semiconductors by starting with the production of less complex mature nodes, according to Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India. This strategy is seen as a good approach as it is easier to implement and fulfills the requirements for many use cases. The recent approval of three semiconductor units in India, with a total investment of over Rs 1.25 lakh crore, further supports the country's goal. MediaTek is open to sourcing chips from Indian companies if they meet their requirements. While it may take time, India has the potential to become one of the top five semiconductor producers.

India's fabless startup ecosystem is evolving, emphasizing mature tech nodes (65 nanometres and above) for sectors like electric vehicles, solar energy, and smart cities, as suggested by Marvell's Navin Bishnoi. The focus is on using cost-effective, mature nodes to accommodate limited R&D budgets. The initiative aims to strengthen India's semiconductor landscape with hundreds of fabless companies. While Marvell expands R&D in India, challenges remain, particularly in high-end chip production due to substantial investments needed.

The Indian government has requested Tower Semiconductor to revise its proposal for establishing a chip fabrication unit in India. The government wants the Israeli company to partner with a technology firm that can offer advanced nodes for manufacturing. Currently, Tower Semiconductor's proposal only includes a plan for 180 nm nodes, while the government desires partners for nodes such as 28 nm, 40 nm, 55 nm, and 65 nm. Additionally, the government wants more information on the proposed uptake for the finished product, as the demand for 180 nm and above analogue nodes is declining globally.

Indian conglomerates, including Tata group, the Adani group, and Larsen & Toubro, are venturing into the semiconductor space with partnerships with foreign chipmakers. While Indian companies lack the intellectual property and technical know-how to compete with companies like Nvidia in chip designing, they aim to reduce reliance on imports and master mature nodes before potentially upgrading to advanced nodes in the future. This approach mirrors that of Samsung, which started as a conglomerate before becoming an innovator and the world's largest chipmaker by revenue.

Amidst the ongoing chip war between the US and China, the US holds the upper hand in cutting-edge technology while China gains an advantage in the production of mature, or 'legacy', chips. China's aggressive expansion in legacy chip production is driven by rising demand for essentials like automobiles and household appliances. Chinese companies are investing heavily in wafer fabrication equipment and increasing their global market share in mature nodes. This poses a risk to US players and may require state aid to compete with China. The conflict in the chip war is likely to spread beyond advanced technologies.
