Venture capital firm Matrix Partners India has renamed its Indian arm as Z47 and China’s as MPC. The fund’s operations in the US will continue as Matrix, an early-stage venture capital fund with headquarters in Boston and San Francisco. The VC firm also added that the new name is inspired by India’s journey towards a developed country by 2047. “The decision to rename is driven by a shared commitment to clarity in the marketplace, responsiveness to regional market dynamics and a continued focus on competing locally, which will benefit each organization’s respective portfolio companies, investors, and partners,” said Matrix in a statement. In May 2023, Matrix launched a fund worth $450 million and later extended the target size for the fund to $525 million. In the past 12 months, the fund has backed more than dozen startups including Neysa, InPrime, Krutrim SI Designs, Aampe, Atomic Work, Wootz.work, Stable Money, Grey Labs AI, and Scapia, among others. This is the second largest fund, which operates in India, has gone through a rebranding exercise. In June 2023, Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Sequoia split into three separate firms to focus on– the US and Europe, China, India and Southeast Asia. Following the move, Sequoia India and Southeast Asia rebranded as Peak XV Partners. Last month, early-stage accelerator fund 9Unicorns also announced its rebranding as 100Unicorns.

Foxtale, a direct-to-consumer (D2C) skincare brand, recently raised Rs 250 crore (approximately $30 million) in its Series C funding round, led by Japanese beauty products company Kose Corporation with the participation of existing investors—Z47 (formerly Matrix Partners India), Kae Capital, and Panthera Growth Partners. Entrackr has gone through its regulatory filings to decode details such as round break-up, shareholding, and current valuation. The board at Foxtale has issued 20 equity shares and 18,847 Series C compulsory convertible preference shares at an issue price of 1,32,237 each to raise Rs 250 crore or $30 million. Kose Corporation led the round with an investment of Rs 153 crore (approximately $18 million), followed by Z47 (formerly Matrix Partners India), which contributed Rs 45.95 crore (around $5.4 million). Panthera Growth Partners and Kae Capital, through the Kael Opportunities Fund, pumped in Rs 29.5 crore ($3.5 million) and Rs 21 crore ($2.5 million), respectively. According to Fintrackr’s estimates, the company’s post-money valuation has surged to Rs 1,530 crore (approximately $180 million), nearly doubling from its previous valuation of Rs 795 crore (around $93.5 million). Following the fresh allotment of the Series C round, Z47 (formerly Matrix Partners India) remains the largest external shareholder with a 19.64% stake, followed by Kae Capital at 17.35% and Panthera Growth Partners at 12.62%. New investor Kose Corporation now holds a 10% stake in the company. Founder and CEO of the company, Romita Mazumdar holds a 34.38% stake. Founded in 2021, Foxtale is an affordable skincare brand that develops products specifically formulated for Indian skin types, targeting issues such as acne, aging, and hyperpigmentation. Its products are available on the brand’s official website as well as popular marketplaces including Nykaa, Amazon, Blinkit, Flipkart, and Myntra. For the fiscal year ending FY24, the Mumbai-based D2C brand recorded a nearly six-fold increase in operating revenue to Rs 83 crore from Rs 14 crore in FY23. However, the company also reported a loss of Rs 55 crore during FY24.

SaaS-based food supply platform FarMart has raised Rs 84 crore (approx $10 million) through a mix of equity and debt funding. FarMart allotted 977 Series C CCPS at Rs 4,52,182 per share, with GC India Investment Holdings leading the round with Rs 43 crore, followed by Matrix Partners India (Z47) contributing Rs 1 crore, its regulatory filing sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) shows. Besides equity funding, FarMart has issued non-convertible debentures to Stride and Trifecta Venture, totaling Rs 40 crore, the filing shows. The company will use the funds for growth, expansion, and general corporate purposes, as per filings. Entrackr estimates that FarMart has been valued at around Rs 1,800 crore (around $210 million) post-allotment in the latest funding round. FarMart’s B2B platform digitizes the supply chain for agricultural inputs and produce, connecting nearby buyers and sellers to reduce logistics costs associated with long-distance transportation. The company has a strong retailer network across central and northern India, though its presence remains limited in southern states and Jammu & Kashmir. The company has raised over $60 million to date, including its $32 million Series B round led by General Catalyst, with participation from existing investors, Z47, and Omidyar Network India. According to TheKredible, FarMart’s operating revenue grew 30% year-on-year to Rs 1,341 crore in FY24, while it reported a net loss of Rs 68 crore for the same period. GC India Investment Holdings Group, Z47, and ON Mauritius are among the company’s lead investors. Farmart directly competes with Info Edge-backed Gramophone, Kalaari-backed Agrim, Krishify, and others.
