Man vs. machine: DeepMind’s new robot serves up a table tennis triumph

Google DeepMind has developed an AI-powered robotic table tennis player that can compete at an amateur human level. The system combines the ABB IRB 1100 industrial robot arm with custom AI software. While a human expert can defeat the bot, it demonstrates the potential for machines to master physical tasks that require split-second decision-making. The AI agent showed solid amateur-level play, winning 45% of its matches against varying skill levels. The system's architecture combines low-level skill controllers with a high-level decision-maker to adapt to opponents. The researchers believe the techniques developed can be applied to various tasks requiring quick reactions and adaptation to unpredictable human behavior.
