Mahindra-backed Rocksport raises funds at $30 Mn valuation

Rocksport, a provider of in-school adventure programs, has secured a new round of investment from Brand Capital, the strategic investment arm of The Times of India. With this latest funding, Rocksport has raised nearly $3 million, to close its Series A round, elevating its valuation to $30 million. The funds will primarily finance advertising and brand-building initiatives aimed at introducing customers to Rocksport and its distinctive offerings, the company said in a press release. Moreover, Brand Capital will provide a leverage of The Times of India’s brand building and marketing strengths for Rocksport. Previously, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts had picked up a strategic stake in Rocksport to expand its pan India footprint beyond metro cities. It has expanded its offerings to curate programs for families and companies since then. Currently, more than 1,000 premier schools run Rocksport’s soft adventure programs. The firm aims to dominate the adventure-based experiences market for schools, families, and corporations during trips and weekends. Rocksport imports and distributes 8 global adventure and outdoor brands in India. The marquee brands include the likes of Coleman, CampinGaz, Contiigo, Edelrid and Lifestraw.

Online gold loan platform Rupeek has raised Rs 50 crore from 360 One Large Value Fund (formerly IIFL Wealth Management). Significantly, the company’s valuation nosedived by 60% in the new round. The board at Rupeek has passed a board resolution to issue 1,307 compulsory convertible preference shares at an issue price of Rs 3,82,492 each to raise Rs 50 crore, its regulatory filing shows. The company will use these funds for growth, expansion, and general corporate activities, as the company’s board decides. During FY24, the company also raised around Rs 43 crore from existing investors such as Peak XV, Bertelsmann, Accel India, and GGV Investments, the filing further shows. According to Fintrackr‘s estimates, the company has been valued at around Rs 2,050 crore or $250 million post-allotment. This implies that the company raised new money at a 60% haircut in its valuation as compared to Rupeek’s peak valuation of $634 million in January 2022. Recently, an ET report said that Rupeek was in talks to raise funds from Ranjan Pai’ investment office Claypond Capital and Axis Bank at a valuation of $200-250 million. Rupeek provides gold loan services and claims to streamline the entire processing from underwriting to disbursal in 30 minutes. The Binny Bansal-backed company has raised around $150 million to date. As per startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, PeakXV is the largest external stakeholder followed by Accel and Bertelsmann. Its new investor 360 One Large Value Fund holds 2.44% (post-allotment). The Bengaluru-based company is yet to report FY24 numbers but its revenue from operations declined 27.6% to Rs 89 crore in FY23 while the losses stood at Rs 281 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2023. The Sumit Maniyar-led firm directly competes with Oro Money, Ruptok, Yellow Metal, and to some extent with PayU-backed Indiagold. There should be no issues on the valuation haircut for Rupeek, considering that its peak valuation was not just at the peak of the funding cycle, but subsequent performance has also failed to justify those numbers. There are far too many founders who get hung up on a specific valuation number, before it is too late to raise fresh funding. Rupeek has clearly focused on the next steps, rather than dwell on the past too much. That it found backers at the new valuation figure also speaks about the credibility the founders retain, despite the tough times in the recent past.

Managed accommodation provider Stanza Living has raised Rs 110 crore ($13 million) in what appears to be a bridge round led by Alpha Wave. The equity round is coming after a gap of more than three years for the Delhi-based startup. The board at Stanza Living has passed a special resolution to issue 1,207 preference shares at a price of Rs 911440.17 each to raise Rs 110 crore, its regulatory filing accessed from the Registrar of Companies shows. Alpha Wave has pumped in Rs 83 Crore while Matrix Partners, Accel India and Peak XV invested Rs 27 crore cumulatively. As per startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, Stanza Living was valued at around Rs 3,900 crore ($470 million). This is a marginal jump in valuation from Rs 3,525 crore ($424 million) in the last equity round. The firm was reportedly in talks to raise funding to the tune of $25 million. Stanza Living had raised $57 million in a debt round led by Kotak Mahindra Bank and RBL Bank in March 2022 and $100 million in an equity round in April 2021. So far, it has scooped up over $230 million across equity and debt rounds. Stanza Living is a managed accommodation platform which provides co-living solutions for working professionals and students. The firm claims to have an inventory of more than 75,000 beds in 450 plus residences with a presence across 24 cities. Stanza Living’s revenue from operations surged to Rs 442 crore in FY23 from Rs 115 crore in FY22. As per TheKredible, its losses increased by 18.71% to Rs 495 crore in FY23 as compared to Rs 417 crore in FY22. The firm is yet to file its audited financial statements for FY24. Stanza Living competes with Colive, Your Space, Settl, Union Living and Coho. Last year, Tiger Global-backed home rental startup NestAway was acquired by Aurum PropTech (formerly Majesco Ltd) in a 90% haircut in valuation to $11 million.

Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) chain Biryani Blues has raised $5 million (about Rs 42 crore) in a pre-Series C funding round led by Carpediem Capital’s new fund, Yugadi Capital. The round was closed at a Rs 250 crore (around $30 million) valuation, which is a 51% premium to Biryani Blues’ valuation after a funding round in 2021. Biryani Blues last had a funding round in 2021, when it received $5 million (around Rs 36 crore) from Rebel Foods, the parent company of Faasos and Behrouz Biryani. To date, it has raised $15 million. The fresh funds will be used to open 100 new outlets, hire talent, and improve operations and logistics, Biryani Blues said in a press release. Co-founded in 2013 by Raymond Andrews and Aparna Andrews, Biryani Blues operates in three formats: Express stores focused on delivery with minimal seating, cloud kitchens, and food courts in malls, airports, and railway stations. The brand claims that it currently operates 68 outlets across North India and Bengaluru. Biryani Blues states that it has achieved EBITDA profitability in FY25 after improving its gross margin, which has increased by nearly 5% over the past year. This was achieved through better procurement, streamlined store operations, and effective inventory management. The Hyderabad-based brand operates on an omni-channel model, catering to both dine-in and delivery customers, and processes over two lakh orders each month. Its current annual revenue run rate stands at around Rs 100 crore. Biryani Blues draws 70% of its revenue from aggregators such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Magicpin, while the remaining 30% is split between delivery, dining, and takeaway services. The company ended FY25 with revenue of Rs 85 crore against Rs 76 crore in FY24, and is targeting Rs 102 crore in FY26.

Exclusive: Droom India raises funds at $360 Mn valuation IPO-bound used car marketplace Droom is raising Rs 25 crore (approximately $2.9 million) in a fresh funding round co-led by India Accelerator (IA), and Rameshchandra Shah. The board at Droom has passed a special resolution to issue 15,62,500 preference shares at an issue price of Rs 160 each to raise Rs 25 crore or $2.9 million, its regulatory filings sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) shows. India Accelerator and Shah both will invest Rs 5 crore each, Shirish Patel, CEO of Prudent Corporate Advisory (wealth management company) will invest Rs 3 crore and the remaining amount will be invested by other individual investors. The firm will use these proceeds for general corporate purposes, the filings said. As per Entrackr’s estimates, the Gurugram-based firm will be valued at approximately Rs 3,097 crore or $360 million post-allotment. “We deliberately kept the valuation very low for the Indian subsidiary as a strategic move to give material upside to Indians who did not have opportunity to participate in the making of Droom in the past one decade,” said Sandeep Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Droom, in response to queries about the company's valuation. “We plan to raise a bit more capital in the near term at much higher valuation both in Singapore and India…” Droom is an online marketplace for buying and selling used vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and electric vehicles. It also offers rental services. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, Droom has raised approximately $330 million from investors including 57 Stars, Seven Train Ventures, Lightbox, and Beenext. Droom reported Rs 85 crore in revenue for FY24, a 66% decline from Rs 253 crore in FY23. It managed to reduce its losses by 35% to Rs 40 crore in FY24. Droom is reportedly planning to file draft papers for a Rs 1,000 crore IPO in 2027, targeting a valuation between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion.
