Justice Department indicts 7 accused in 14-year hack campaign by Chinese gov

The US Justice Department has unsealed an indictment charging seven men with hacking or attempting to hack dozens of US companies over a 14-year period. The men are accused of furthering an economic espionage and foreign intelligence gathering campaign by the Chinese government. Prosecutors allege that the defendants were associated with a front company created by the Hubei State Security Department, which is funded by the Chinese Ministry of State Security. The campaign targeted thousands of individuals and companies, compromising email accounts, cloud storage accounts, and telephone call records, resulting in potential loss of intellectual property and trade secrets belonging to American businesses.
