Joe Biden Wants US Government Algorithms Tested for Potential Harm Against Citizens

The White House has released draft rules that would require federal agencies to assess and monitor algorithms used in sectors like healthcare, law enforcement, and housing for potential discrimination or harm to human rights. The rules could lead to changes in the use of AI by government agencies, including the FBI's face recognition technology. However, exemptions for national security have been carved out, and waivers may be issued by agencies if halting the use of AI would significantly impact critical operations. The draft memo also emphasizes the need for testing, evaluation, and independent assessment of algorithms to ensure their compliance with public safety and privacy standards. The Office of Management and Budget is seeking public comment on the draft policy until December 5th.
