India's space agency, ISRO, has achieved a breakthrough in rocket engine technology by developing a lightweight Carbon-Carbon (C-C) nozzle. This innovation, achieved by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, is expected to enhance rocket engine parameters such as thrust levels, specific impulse, and thrust-to-weight ratios. By utilizing advanced materials and processes, including Carbon-Carbon composites and an anti-oxidation coating, the C-C nozzle offers exceptional properties and high resistance to corrosion. This development is significant for the ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and is projected to increase its payload capability by 15 kg. Successful testing confirmed the nozzle's performance and hardware integrity.

SpaceX's Starship, the largest rocket ever built, successfully completed its third test flight on Thursday, achieving more than the previous two tests. The 400-foot-tall rocket lifted off and went through a nominal ascent, with all 33 engines performing as designed. The rocket executed a new stage separation technique called "hot staging" and reached orbital velocity. However, the booster's engines failed to reignite for the landing burn phase, resulting in its loss. Despite this, the company achieved other milestones, including opening Starship's payload door for the first time. The test also involved a propellant transfer demonstration.

The University of Glasgow has developed the world's first autophage rocket engine that uses its own fuselage as fuel. The design burns high-density plastic tubes as fuel, allowing the rocket to have more space for payloads compared to other vehicles of similar mass. The engine, named Ouroborous-3, successfully underwent initial test firings and demonstrated the ability to control its burn. The researchers plan to develop a flight-weight engine prototype and use liquid oxidizers. The autophage rocket offers a solution to the growing problem of space debris as it consumes itself during the journey.

NASA conducted a test of a new SLS solid rocket booster, intended for the Artemis IX mission, but the test failed as the nozzle disintegrated, causing a fiery plume. Despite NASA's effort to modernize propulsion technology with Northrop Grumman's Booster Obsolescence and Life Extension (BOLE) program, challenges persist. The program aims to replace shuttle-era parts with advanced materials and designs. NASA also tested a new RS-25 engine, but its future deployment remains uncertain amidst discussions on program viability.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a major breakthrough in reusable launch vehicle (RLV) technology with the successful completion of the RLV LEX-02 landing experiment. The RLV, named Pushpak, autonomously navigated towards the runway and landed using its brake parachute, landing gear brakes, and nose wheel steering system. This achievement demonstrates significant progress towards developing autonomous landing capabilities for space vehicles. The success of the experiment also validates the indigenous technologies developed by ISRO for navigation, control systems, landing gear, and deceleration systems. The mission was conducted in collaboration with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), the Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC), and the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU).

Colorado-based startup Agile Space Industries is addressing the lack of facilities for testing rocket and spacecraft engines by operating two test stands, Sunshine and Animas. Sunshine was established in 2010 and Animas, which was recently inaugurated, is the only commercial facility capable of vacuum testing hypergolic engines weighing up to 6,000 pounds. The modular design of Animas allows for a range of test campaigns, from early prototype to qualification and acceptance testing. The availability of testing facilities earlier in the development process is advantageous for space ventures as it minimizes costly setbacks and improves schedule predictability.
