India’s AI Safety Institute should strike balance between ‘prevention’ and ‘promotion’, says Raghunath Mashelkar

India should establish an AI Safety Institute to ensure responsible and beneficial use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the country, according to Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, a leading Indian scientist. He believes that India should create its own version of similar institutes in the UK and US, tailored to address the unique challenges and opportunities in India. Mashelkar also suggests that India should develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for AI to strike a balance between promoting its growth and preventing unintended consequences. Additionally, he advocates for upskilling initiatives and social security measures to address potential job displacement due to AI.
