India stands out in terms of AI skill penetration and AI hiring rate, ranking first and top four globally, respectively. The country has experienced the fastest growth rate for AI talent, albeit starting from a low concentration. In terms of GitHub AI projects, India is second only to the US. However, it lags behind in AI patents, accounting for a mere 0.2% from 2010 to 2022. Private investments in AI also pale in comparison to the US, with only $9 billion invested between 2013 and 2023. Similarly, the number of newly-funded AI companies is significantly lower in India compared to the US.

The banking and financial services industry leads in AI adoption at 68%, followed by the tech industry at 60-65%. Other sectors such as pharma, healthcare, FMCG, retail, manufacturing, infrastructure, transport, and media and entertainment have varying adoption rates. The AI market size in 2023 was estimated at $6 billion, set to reach $20 billion by 2028. However, India still lags behind global AI markets due to a talent gap and the need for more supportive government policies. The government has allocated over Rs 10,000 crore to the India AI Mission to boost AI capabilities in the country.
