Samsung Electronics, a South Korean technology giant, has been falling behind in the artificial intelligence (AI) race. However, recent signs suggest that it might be narrowing the technological gap with rivals SK Hynix and Micron in high-performance AI memory chips. While SK Hynix has taken an early lead in HBM (high-bandwidth memory), Samsung is catching up and expects to mass-produce next-generation HBM chips in the first half of this year. The growing demand for HBM chips is expected to benefit Samsung and the overall memory market as AI applications require more powerful devices with higher memory capacity.

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix reported its highest quarterly profit since 2018, benefiting from strong demand for high-end chips used in AI applications. The company anticipates that demand for high bandwidth memory (HBM) used in generative AI chipsets will continue to grow, with next year's HBM shipments expected to more than double this year's. However, SK Hynix shares dropped as investor expectations were not met. The company leads the HBM market and supplies chips to Nvidia, commanding 80% of the AI chip market. SK Hynix plans to ship the next versions of HBM chips in the coming quarters.

The new US restrictions on Nvidia's H20 AI chip exports to China will have limited impact on South Korean chipmakers, according to experts. SK hynix, supplying HBM3E memory for these chips, is primarily focused on their latest generation destined for non-Chinese markets. The export ban will not affect SK hynix's financials, as contracts are already secured. However, uncertainty lingers as the broader Chinese AI chip market could slow down, affecting future opportunities.
