A video of a Chinese waitress serving food with robotic-like movements has gone viral, dividing opinions on whether she is a humanoid robot or a human acting like one. While some believe it to be a robot, it has been confirmed that the woman is actually the owner of the restaurant and a professional dancer. China has recently expressed ambitions to lead in humanoid robotics, but this particular video does not feature a robot server. Robot servers have already been deployed in some US and Korean restaurants, with potential benefits such as addressing labor shortages and consistent performance.

AI Algorithms Are Biased Against Skin With Yellow Hues

Sony researchers have found that common measures of skin tone used to test AI algorithms for bias overlook the contribution of yellow and red hues in human skin. Existing scales that focus on light to dark or white to black fail to capture the full diversity of human skin color. Generative AI systems, image-cropping algorithms, and photo analysis tools all struggle with yellow-toned skin in particular. The researchers suggest a new approach that takes into account both the depth of color and the gradation from yellow to red, potentially addressing bias and underrepresentation in AI systems.

Amazon is testing Agility Robotics' humanoid robot, called Digit, in its US warehouses. Digit is a two-legged robot that can walk and lift boxes, offering a cost-effective alternative to human employees. However, Boston Dynamics' CTO Aaron Saunders argues that humanoid robots may not always be the best form factor for tasks like moving boxes. Agility Robotics' selling point for Digit is its adaptability to existing warehouse infrastructure and the ability to lift objects of various sizes and weights. Boston Dynamics also offers a similar solution with its robot Stretch, which has a crane-like arm and flexible mobility.

Artificial intelligence's conceptual roots trace back over 2,500 years, seen in ancient Greek mythology. Greek poets like Hesiod and Homer envisioned mechanical beings like Talos, a self-operating robot created by the god Hephaestus, and Pandora, possibly an AI agent sent by Zeus. These myths reflect early human fascination with creating intelligence in machines, echoing modern AI developments. Though technology is new, the desire to replicate human traits in tools is ancient.
