How CrowdStrike tech outage reignited battle over the heart of Microsoft systems

The recent tech outage that affected businesses worldwide has raised questions about the risks associated with granting companies access to the kernel of a computer's operating system. While access to the kernel is necessary to protect against viruses, the July outage exposed the potential dangers of this level of openness on Microsoft's Windows computers. Some developers and software makers argue that there are safer ways to access the kernel without full access, such as Apple's approach of restricting access to the kernel for third-party vendors. Another alternative is the Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) technology, which could have prevented the outage, according to its proponents. However, Microsoft has yet to adopt these alternatives, citing security concerns.
