Hollywood animation, VFX unions fight AI job cut threat

The U.S. film, television, and animation industry, which employs over 550,000 people, is facing disruptions from generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools. This technology has led to the elimination, reduction, or consolidation of jobs in the industry, according to a study commissioned by labor groups representing artists. Unions representing animation and visual effects workers are now seeking rules to govern the use of AI in studios to prevent the replacement of human workers with inferior AI versions. However, some argue that AI tools could democratize the industry and open up new opportunities for independent filmmakers. Legal challenges also surround the use of generative AI tools and their compliance with copyright laws.
