Govt urges Parliament standing committee on IT to take up social media content vulgarity issue

The Indian government has called on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology to address the issue of vulgarity on social media platforms as a top priority, according to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister highlighted that the cultural sensitivities in India differ significantly from those where these platforms were created. The government has previously blocked 18 over-the-top content streaming platforms for featuring obscene and vulgar content and has imposed obligations on social media intermediaries to prevent the hosting or display of such content. Additionally, an advisory group on artificial intelligence has been established to develop a responsible AI framework in India.
