Google paid $2.7 billion to bring back an AI genius who quit in frustration

Google has rehired Noam Shazeer, a co-author of a research paper that contributed to the AI boom, after he left to start his own company. Google paid around $2.7 billion to license Character.AI's technology and as part of the deal, Shazeer agreed to work for Google again. This move has raised questions about whether tech companies are overspending in the race to develop cutting-edge AI. Shazeer is now one of three people leading Google's efforts to build the next version of its most powerful AI technology.
