Google is expanding its Advanced Protection Program (APP) to allow users to store secure cryptographic keys in the form of passkeys, in addition to physical token devices. APP requires the strongest form of multifactor authentication, and the use of passkeys adds an extra layer of security. Previously, Google required two physical security keys to enroll in APP, but now users can use two passkeys or a combination of one passkey and one physical token. The move aims to provide more flexibility and accessibility to users who may not be able to afford or access physical keys.

Independent browser companies in the European Union have witnessed an increase in user numbers following the EU legislation that required major tech companies including Google, Microsoft, and Apple to make it easier for users to switch to rival browsers. Cyprus-based Aloha Browser reported a 250% jump in EU users in March, making it their second-largest market. Other companies, such as Vivaldi, Ecosia, Brave, DuckDuckGo, and Opera, have also seen growth in users. The EU rules now mandate mobile software makers to offer users a choice screen where they can select their preferred browser, search engine, and virtual assistant during device setup.

EU antitrust regulators are seeking feedback on whether Microsoft's Bing and Apple's iMessage should comply with new strict tech rules. The European Commission is investigating whether Bing, Edge, and Microsoft Advertising, as well as Apple's iMessage, should be subject to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA requires tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and ByteDance to allow for third-party apps on their platforms and make it easier for users to switch to alternatives. The Commission sent out questionnaires to gather input from users and rivals regarding the importance and usage of these services.

This move aims to make it easier for customers to switch providers without financial barriers. The decision comes after concerns were raised by Britain's media regulator, Ofcom, about fees that discourage customers from changing cloud vendors. However, Google acknowledges that restrictive and unfair licensing practices also play a significant role in customers' reluctance to switch.
