Global data centre industry to emit 2.5 billion tons of CO2 through 2030: Morgan Stanley

The booming data center industry is predicted to generate around 2.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions by the end of the decade, driving increased investment in decarbonization solutions. Hyperscalers like Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are rapidly expanding data centers to support AI and cloud computing technologies, while also pledging to reduce emissions by 2030. Morgan Stanley's research highlights that data centers will contribute roughly 40% of the annual emissions in the United States. Consequently, there will be increased investment in clean power development, energy-efficient equipment, green building materials, carbon capture technology, and carbon dioxide removal processes.
