Generative AI is coming for healthcare, and not everyone's thrilled

Generative AI is being integrated into the healthcare industry by Big Tech firms and startups, but not everyone is convinced of its readiness. Generative AI can create and analyze various types of data such as images, text, and audio. Google Cloud, Amazon's AWS, and Microsoft Azure are all collaborating on generative AI tools for personalized patient intake, database analysis, and triaging messages to care providers. However, concerns revolve around the limitations and potential risks of generative AI, including its inability to handle complex medical queries and emergencies, potential misdiagnoses, perpetuation of stereotypes, and privacy and security concerns. In a Deloitte survey, only 53% of consumers believed generative AI could improve healthcare. While some experts believe generative AI has its place in specific areas of medicine, rigorous scientific trials and appropriate governance are necessary to ensure patient safety and trust.
