Former Google engineer arrested for alleged theft of AI trade secrets for Chinese firms

Former Google software engineer Linwei Ding has been arrested and charged with stealing trade secrets related to artificial intelligence (AI) from the company. The US Department of Justice alleges that Ding, a Chinese national, stole confidential information about Google's data centers and uploaded hundreds of files into his personal Google Cloud account. It is claimed that the stolen secrets included details about GPU and TPU chips and systems, as well as software related to AI technology. Ding allegedly concealed his actions while secretly working with two Chinese companies and even accepted the position of chief technology officer at one of them. If convicted, Ding could face up to 10 years in prison for each count of federal trade secret theft.
