Apple supplier Pegatron temporarily suspended iPhone assembly at its southern India facility due to a fire incident. The Taiwanese company canceled the first two shifts and hadn't yet decided on the third shift. Fortunately, there were no casualties as the incident occurred during a holiday when the factory wasn't operational. The extent of the damages is yet to be determined. Pegatron contributes 10% of Apple's iPhone production in India. Apple has been investing in Indian manufacturing since 2017 in alignment with the government's push for local production.

- A fire at Tata Group's iPhone component plant in India could hamper production ahead of the festive season sales surge. - The fire has caused an indefinite production halt at Tata's Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu, the only Indian supplier of iPhone back panels and some other parts. - India's iPhone sales during the festive season could be impacted by up to 15% due to the fire. - Apple may offset the impact by importing more components and re-routing export inventory towards India. - Apple suppliers typically carry a three- to four-week stock of back panels, which could prevent an immediate impact on production. - If the production suspension continues, Apple may consider setting up another assembly line in China or adding shifts there to secure parts for India's iPhone manufacturers.

The fire, which started in an area used to store chemicals, has been extinguished and workers who were hospitalised are expected to be discharged soon.

Taiwanese company Pegatron is reportedly in discussions to sell its iPhone manufacturing facility in India to the Tata Group. The deal, which has the support of Apple, will see Tata hold a majority stake in a joint venture that will operate the Pegatron plant. Pegatron's India factory currently has 10,000 employees and produces 5 million iPhones annually. If the deal goes through, it would be another scaling back of Pegatron's partnership with Apple, following the sale of an iPhone plant in China last year.

Contract manufacturer Aequs group, based in Karnataka, is in the trial stage of becoming an Apple supplier. If successful, it would be the second Indian company to be included on Apple's supplier list and the sole domestic firm to supply parts for MacBook personal computers and Apple watches. Aequs has begun trial production of MacBook enclosures and mechanical components for the Apple watch, and has sent these parts to Apple's designated supplier in Vietnam for fitment checks. The process to become an Apple supplier is rigorous, but electronics manufacturing in India offers a compelling opportunity for companies to enter the sector.

Foxlink, an Apple vendor and Foxconn affiliate, is reportedly building a new manufacturing unit near Chennai in India. The move comes after a fire at Foxlink's Tirupati unit last year, which caused significant damage. The new plant in Oragadam is expected to begin production soon, and Foxlink is looking to expand its product portfolio. This expansion follows difficulties in sustaining operations at the Andhra Pradesh facility. Foxlink manufactures cables, connectors, power management devices, and battery packs for consumer electronics companies, including Apple. Apple itself is increasing its production in India to reduce dependence on China.
