Facebook failed to control Covid misinformation due to its design, reveals study

A recent study revealed that Facebook's efforts to combat Covid-19 vaccine misinformation were ineffective due to the platform's design features. The study, conducted by researchers at George Washington University, found that simply removing content or changing algorithms is not enough to address misinformation. The design of the platform itself, which facilitates the spread of information based on users' interests, contributed to the continued engagement with anti-vaccine content. Additionally, the study highlighted the increase in misinformation on alternative social media platforms and the polarization of vaccine-related content on Facebook. The researchers suggested that platform designers collaborate to develop guidelines informed by scientific evidence to reduce online harms.
