EU to probe Meta over handling of Russian disinformation: report

The European Union regulators are anticipated to launch an investigation into Meta Platforms due to concerns that the company is not adequately combatting disinformation campaigns originating from Russia and other countries. It is suspected that Meta's content moderation efforts are insufficient in preventing the spread of political advertising that could undermine electoral processes. However, Russia will not be specifically targeted in the European Commission's statement, which is expected to address the manipulation of information by foreign actors. Meta and the European Commission have not yet commented on the matter. Several countries, including the UK, Austria, and Georgia, are set to hold elections in 2024, and the European Parliament elections are scheduled for June.
