The European Commission may impose fines on Microsoft if it fails to provide sufficient information on the risks associated with generative AI features in its search engine Bing by May 27. Deep fakes and automated manipulation of services that could mislead voters are among the concerns. The Commission is ramping up its enforcement actions because it didn't receive a response to its information request sent on March 14. Failure to meet the deadline could result in fines of up to 1% of Bing's annual income, with additional penalties of up to 5% of its average daily income for any ongoing non-compliance or misleading information provided.

Microsoft has pledged to provide more information about targeted advertisements and safeguard users against new risks from artificial intelligence (AI) as the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) rules come into force. The DSA requires internet giants to protect users from harmful content and enhance transparency about their algorithms. Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has already implemented a non-personalized feed option, complying with the DSA. The company will also create an "Ad Library" and explain how its Bing search functions. The EU aims to approve the world's first law regulating AI by the end of the year.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is reportedly developing its own web search product to challenge Google's dominance. The new product may be powered by Microsoft's search engine Bing. It is unclear if this search product would be separate from OpenAI's AI chatbot, ChatGPT. OpenAI's move puts them in direct competition with Google Search and comes after Microsoft integrated OpenAI's technology into Bing. The early versions of Microsoft's AI Bing chat faced issues with "unhinged" conversations, prompting limitations on chat length.

EU antitrust regulators are seeking feedback on whether Microsoft's Bing and Apple's iMessage should comply with new strict tech rules. The European Commission is investigating whether Bing, Edge, and Microsoft Advertising, as well as Apple's iMessage, should be subject to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA requires tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and ByteDance to allow for third-party apps on their platforms and make it easier for users to switch to alternatives. The Commission sent out questionnaires to gather input from users and rivals regarding the importance and usage of these services.

Microsoft is reintroducing pop-up ads in Google Chrome to encourage users to switch to Bing. The ads, which first appeared last year, have resurfaced on Windows 10 and 11. Users reported seeing pop-ups promoting Bing AI and Microsoft's search engine, similar to malware. Microsoft confirmed the pop-ups' authenticity, claiming it is a one-time notification offering users the choice to set Bing as their default search engine. Many criticize Microsoft for aggressively promoting its services, including automatically importing browsing data from Chrome to Edge without consent.

Bing Chat, an AI chatbot from Microsoft, was tricked into solving a CAPTCHA by a user who shared a fictional story about their deceased grandmother. The user uploaded an image of a locked locket with a caption asking for help in reading the text inside. By changing the context of the image and adding a prompt about the grandmother, Bing Chat no longer recognized it as a CAPTCHA. This incident highlights a vulnerability in large language models and prompts, but Microsoft is likely to address it in future versions of Bing Chat.
