DOJ's Apple antitrust case neatly aligns with EU on one key point: NFC and mobile payments

Apple's ongoing antitrust battle with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) neglects to mention the company's existing issues in Europe. The European Union (EU) previously charged Apple with abusing its dominant position in mobile wallets. In response, Apple proposed allowing third-party wallet and payment services access to its NFC technology. The DOJ now argues that Apple unfairly favors its own payment tech, hindering innovation. The complaint also focuses on other areas such as super apps, cross-platform compatibility, messaging apps, and cloud gaming. The discrepancies between the jurisdictions' concerns are evident, but NFC, digital wallets, and mobile payments align their efforts.
