Did WhatsApp's policy tweak break the law?

India's competition watchdog, the Competition Commission (CCI), has concluded that WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly Facebook Inc.), violated the country's competition law. The case refers to WhatsApp's privacy policy update in 2021 that allowed the sharing of user data with Meta. The CCI is set to issue an order, possibly including a penalty, based on the investigation report submitted by the Director General (DG). In India, WhatsApp has the highest number of users globally with close to 536 million, making the outcome of the investigation significant.
