DCGI issues fresh code for drug inspectors to keep market vigil | Mint

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued a new code for drug inspectors to ensure uniformity and accountability in their inspections, sample collections, and permits. The code replaces outdated guidelines and focuses on a uniform drug sampling method and risk identification during sample selection. Inspectors are required to prepare monthly and annual sampling plans to cover their jurisdiction, including rural areas and drugs used in specific disease-affected regions. The code also emphasizes maintaining a centralized list of sub-standard or spurious drugs and conducting onsite inspections to evaluate compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards. The shortage of drug inspectors in India is a significant challenge that needs to be addressed.
