Edtech company Unacademy is undergoing several high-level appointments. In the latest development, Arooshi Singh has been promoted from Director of People Experience and Culture to Chief People Officer at the Bengaluru-based firm. “I’m thrilled to share that Arooshi Singh, who has been with us for over seven incredible years, is being promoted to Head of HR,” said Gaurav Munjal, CEO and co-founder of Unacademy, in a Slack message to employees on Monday, as reviewed by Entrackr. Singh will replace Sandhydeep Purri, who was appointed as Chief People Officer of the SoftBank-backed company in November 2023. Arooshi led multiple functions across HR functions at Unacademy. She joined the company as a junior staff member for employee wellness. This marks the third promotion announced by the Munjal-led company in 2024. In January, Jagnoor Singh was elevated to Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Unacademy Centres, and last month, Abhishek Pipara was promoted to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the offline business. In the past year, Unacademy has also seen several senior leadership exits, including a co-founder. In August 2023, Chief Operating Officer Vivek Sinha resigned, followed by Group CFO Subramanian Ramachandran in October, and co-founder and CTO Hemesh Singh in June. Last month, Unacademy also disclosed its financial numbers for the fiscal year ending March 2024. While the company’s revenue remained flat for the said fiscal year with Rs 988 crore, it managed to reduce its losses by a whopping 62%.

Edtech startup Leap elevates Rajan Chaudhary as co-founder Edtech startup Leap has elevated its senior executive Rajan Chaudhary as cofounder of the company. He has been working with Leap for more than five years. Most recently, Chaudhary has been serving as the assistant vice president (AVP) of engineering for about 18 months, driving the startup’s technological evolution, scaling its platforms, and advancing product innovation. “Rajan’s elevation reflects our belief in building leadership from within and positions us strongly for the next phase of Leap’s global expansion,” said Vaibhav Singh, cofounder of Leap. Co-founded in 2019 by Vaibhav Singh and Arnav Kumar, Leap, which operates LeapScholar, LeapFinance, GeeBee, and Yocket, runs an online community for study-abroad aspirants. It offers a range of services, including test preparation (IELTS, TOEFL, SAT), admissions and visa counseling, and financial support such as international student loans. It primarily focuses on institutes in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. Leap plans to expand its Middle East and Southeast Asia operations and claims to have partnerships with more than 1,000 international universities. The startup has raised over $400 million to date in equity and debt from investors such as Owl Ventures, Jungle Ventures and Peak XV Partners. Leap’s operating revenue grew 113.7% to Rs 174.92 crore in FY24 from Rs 81.86 crore in FY23. The company managed to cut its net loss by 72.3% to Rs 29.43 crore in the same period. It competes with other major players in this space such as Auxilo, Avanse Financial, GryQuest, Financepeer, Propelld, Mpower Financing, and Eduvanz.

Pocket Entertainment elevates Umesh Bude to CTO Pocket Entertainment, the parent company of Pocket FM, Pocket Toons, and Pocket Novel, has elevated Umesh Bude to Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Previously Senior Vice President of Engineering, Umesh will now lead the company’s technology strategy, focusing on developing the future of AI-powered storytelling across its platforms. As CTO, Umesh will oversee the end-to-end tech stack at Pocket Entertainment and spearhead innovations to scale its products globally. His responsibilities will include designing scalable systems, advancing generative AI capabilities, and delivering technology-led innovations to empower both creators and consumers. “It’s a privilege to take on this role at a time when technology and creativity are deeply intertwined at Pocket Entertainment. I look forward to driving the next wave of innovation, where technology and AI are not just enablers, but storytellers in their own right,” said Bude on his promotion. Umesh will continue to report to Prateek Dixit as the company aims to consolidate its position at the intersection of entertainment and technology. Earlier this year, Pocket Entertainment launched Pocket Toons, an AI-first comics (webcomics) platform that uses AI to transform storytelling and content creation. In March 2024, Pocket FM secured $103 million in its Series D funding round, led by Lightspeed and joined by Stepstone Group. The company has raised $196.5 million in total funding and was valued at $750 million in its last equity round. Pocket FM’s global revenue spiked to Rs 1,051.97 crore in FY24 from Rs 176.36 crore in FY23. The Bengaluru-based company also improved its economics as its losses narrowed by 21% to Rs 165 crore in FY24.
