The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a circular that allows credit and debit card users to have greater choice in selecting card networks. The RBI directive forbids card issuers from entering into agreements that restrict them from using other card networks. The central bank wants banks and non-banks to offer customers the option to choose from multiple card networks when the card is issued or renewed. The circular will be effective from September 6, 2024. The move is expected to boost the adoption of the locally-developed RuPay card network.
