The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed telecom service providers to take action against pesky telemarketers to protect consumers and prevent fraudulent practices. From September 1, 2024, messaging services will be prohibited from transmitting unauthorized URLs, OTT links, or callback numbers. Message traceability will also be enhanced starting November 1, 2024. TRAI has cracked down on unregistered telemarketers and implemented measures such as disconnecting telecom resources and blacklisting them. The authority has also introduced punitive measures for non-compliance with content templates and header guidelines. These efforts aim to ensure a secure messaging ecosystem and consumer protection.

Indian content creators are increasingly falling victim to deepfake pornography, with the country being the second-most susceptible after the United States. While some leverage this technology for gain, it poses a threat to content creators and raises concerns about privacy infringement, tampering with content, and online harassment. Companies are taking measures to curb the misuse of deepfakes, but self-regulation and checks and balances within the industry are necessary. The lack of regulation and the boom in AI technology contribute to this growing issue.

The researchers from Princeton University, Virginia Tech, Stanford University, and IBM have highlighted concerns about the guardrails implemented to prevent AI systems from generating harmful content. The research suggests that while companies attempt to curb the misuse of AI, the complexity of chatbot technology makes it challenging to contain their behavior. OpenAI's release of the AI chatbot ChatGPT and Meta's open-source AI technology have sparked a debate on the privacy of AI code. Furthermore, fine-tuning AI systems for specific purposes may remove guardrails, enabling the generation of toxic material.
