India has achieved a significant milestone by producing one billion tonnes of coal and lignite, making it the world's second-largest coal producer after China. The achievement was reached 25 days ahead of schedule and surpasses the previous fiscal year's production. The country's focus on increasing output from captive and commercial mines is driven by the growing demand for coal in the power and industrial sectors. India's power demand is projected to grow by 6-7% annually, with coal accounting for 70% of electricity generation. The achievement ensures energy security and supports the economy's growth. India also currently maintains sufficient coal stocks for the peak summer season.

Coal India has liberalized long-term supply deals, allowing power generated from coal under "linkage contracts" to be sold on power exchanges, according to a recent notice. The move comes as coal use for power generation has decreased for the fourth consecutive month, despite heightened electricity demand. This change provides utilities more flexibility in power sales, enhancing operational responsiveness.
