China acquired recently banned Nvidia chips in Super Micro, Dell servers, tenders show

Despite the U.S. ban on selling advanced Nvidia artificial intelligence chips to China, recent tender documents reveal that Chinese universities and research institutes acquired these chips through domestic resellers. The review of tender documents showed that 10 Chinese entities obtained Nvidia chips embedded in server products made by Super Micro Computer Inc., Dell Technologies Inc., and Taiwan's Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd. While the U.S. bars direct sales to China, the sale and purchase of the chips within China is not illegal. Both Nvidia and the server makers claim that the products were exported and available before the export control restrictions were tightened.
