According to a study conducted at the University of Reading, AI-generated answers submitted by chatbots went unnoticed and were even graded better than answers written by real students. The researchers submitted answers created by ChatGPT on behalf of "fake students" to the university's examinations system. They found that 94% of the AI-written answers were undetected, and around 83% of them received higher scores than those from human students. This study serves as a warning to educators worldwide about the impact of artificial intelligence on educational assessments and highlights the need for the education sector to adapt.

A new study reveals that generative AI models used for creating images can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone. The research, conducted by Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon, examines the environmental impact of generative AI models, specifically highlighting the high energy consumption of image generation tasks. Multipurpose models like ChatGPT were found to be more energy-intensive than task-specific models. The study calls for awareness of the environmental cost of AI and suggests using smaller models in contexts where tasks are well-defined.

A BBC study found significant issues with news summaries generated by AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity. Over half of the AI-generated summaries contained inaccuracies, with 19% including incorrect statements, numbers, or dates, and 13% altering quotes. Gemini's responses were particularly concerning for inaccuracy. BBC urged tech companies to address these problems, warning AI-distorted headlines could lead to real-world harm. The study emphasizes the need for collaboration between tech companies, the news industry, and governments.

A study published in Nature found that videoconferencing is more exhausting than in-person meetings. Using brain and heart scans, researchers observed physiological changes after 50 minutes of videoconferencing. Participants reported higher levels of fatigue, sadness, and inattentiveness during videoconferencing compared to in-person lectures. The study suggests that videoconferencing should be seen as a complement to face-to-face interaction, rather than a substitute. Previous research on Zoom fatigue relied on self-reporting, but this study provides neurological evidence of its impact. While some workers may experience Zoom fatigue, a Pew Research Center study found that less than four in 10 were worn out by videoconferencing.

A study suggests AI, like ChatGPT, can exhibit behaviors similar to human anxiety, with mindfulness techniques helping to regulate its responses. While this development may improve AI interactions, it raises concerns about AI's unpredictability, especially in critical situations. Researchers highlight that although the ability to "calm down" ChatGPT is a promising step, it is not a substitute for human mental health support, underscoring the need for careful consideration in AI applications.

Researchers at Virginia Tech University have found that OpenAI's AI tool, ChatGPT, has limitations in providing location-specific information about environmental justice issues in rural counties. The study revealed that only about 17% of the total 3,018 counties examined received location-specific information from ChatGPT. The findings highlight the geographic biases of the AI model and raise concerns about disparities in access to information between rural and urban areas. Further research is needed to address these limitations and mitigate the disparities in information availability.
